Whirlpool Appliance Repair

The Whirlpool Corporation was founded as the Upton Machine Company, on the back of a failed investment, in 1911 by Louis Upton, his uncle Emory Upton, and an investor Lowell Bassford in St. Jospeh, Michigan. In 1908, Louis invested in a venture to manufacturer household equipment which failed to materialize. Louis was offered the opportunity to select something of value as a means to recoup his investment in the failed venture; Louis chose the patents on a hand washing machine he believed could be electrified. Shortly thereafter, Louis, his brother Fred, along with their Uncle Emory patented an electric-motor driven wringer washer, and went into production.

The company was off to a good start and soon received their first order for 100 units, all of which unfortunately had to be recalled due to a flaw in the units' transmissions. After the recall and repair of all of the washers, Federal Electric impressed with the new company's strong business ethics, doubled their order to 200 units. The fledgling company was dealt another blow when Federal Electric began production of their own washers having been a customer for three year, forcing the Upton Company to diversify their product offerings, until 1916, when Sears, Roebuck & Co. became their customer. Sears began offering two washing machines under the "Allen" brand, a basic and "deluxe" model, and after several years of strong sales, Sears in 1921, appointed the Upton Machine Company as their sole supplier of washing machines. Fearing a repeat of the situation with Federal Electric, and to avoid become too reliant on Sears, Upton began marketing and selling washing machines under their own brand.

Increasing sales and production demand led to the company merging with the Nineteen Hundred Washer Company in 1929, adopting the name Nineteen Hundred Corporation. Business grew steadily, despite the Great Depression of the 1930's, continuing to experiment with new products, innovative technologies, and engineering techniques. During WWII, like most companies, production was switched to aid the war effort, producing components for P-40 Warhawk aircraft and other military equipment. In 1945, production of washing machines resumed anticipating increased demand post-war, and in 1947 introduced an automatic, spinner-type washer sold by Sears under the "Kenmore" brand. The Nineteen Hundred Corporation changed its name to Whirlpool Corporation in 1950 and began marketing wringer and spinner type washer, as well as irons, under its own brand name in 1950. By the end of the 1950's, Whirlpool Corporation had grown and transitioned from a small washer manufacturer, to a large manufacturer of a full line major home appliances.

Whirlpool Corporation was involved in the development of kitchen equipment for the Gemini, Apollo and Skylab programs, and introduced the first toll-free help line for consumer service support in the 1970's. Through continued growth, strategic mergers and acquisitions, Whirlpool grew to one of the largest appliance manufacturers in the industry. Today, Whirlpool comprises a family of brands including Maytag, Amana, KitchenAid, JennAir, and Admiral among others and continues to build on their 108 year history of quality, innovation, and leadership in the appliance industry.
