Frigidaire started life as Guardian Frigerator Company in 1918, having developed the first self-contained refrigerator invented by Nathaniel B. Wales and Alfred Mellowes in 1916. Shortly thereafter, William C. Durant, one of the founders of General Motors personally invested in the newly founded company, and in 1919, the company adopted the name Frigidaire. The brand became so well known, that by the mid-1900's the name Frigidaire was used interchangeably with the word refrigerator, regardless of brand, and continues to be used as a synonym in several French speaking countries to this day.

From 1919-1979, Frigidaire was owned by General Motors, during which time the company designed and marketed one of the most innovative automatic washing machines available at the time. Designed by Frigidaire engineer Kenneth Sisson, who is also credited with designing the incrementing timer used on clothes washers and dishwashers for many years to come, the design of the clothes washer was updated continuously from the late 1930's until 1979.

Frigidaire, working off of their success in refrigerators and clothes washers, quickly expanded their product line up to include all major kitchen appliances, as well as air conditioning. During the period they were owned by General Motors, they manufactured virtually all of the air conditioning systems for General Motors vehicles. Frigidaire was ultimately sold to the White Sewing Machine Company in 1979, which was then purchased by Electrolux in 1986. Frigidaire, in concert with Electrolux, is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, and  continues to design and manufacturer a large portion of their product lines throughout the United States.
