Tarzana, as the name suggests is related in no small part to Tarzan. In 1919, Edgar Rice Burroughs purchased a 550 acre tract of land from Harrison Gray Otis, the founder of the Los Angeles Times. Having vacationed with his family in California previously, he found the climate ideal, and in March of 1919 having relocated with his family from Oak Park, IL, the purchase was completed. The property was renamed Tarzana Ranch, located at what is now the center of Tarzana. In the late 1920’s, the citizens of the community that sprang up around the Tarzana Ranch, voted to name their new community “Tarzana”, and so it has remained.
